How to use the FDM cost calculator

  1. Enter the print details – part weight in grams and print time in hours and minutes, straight from your slicer.
  2. Set your filament – spool price and spool weight, plus a supports allowance if the slicer weight does not already include it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to 3D print something?

For a typical 100 g PLA print of about 5 hours, filament and electricity together usually cost well under one euro. This calculator also adds supports, printer wear and a failure buffer, so the real cost per print for most desktop FDM prints lands between a few cents and a couple of euros, depending on size, material and your energy price.

How do I calculate filament cost per print?

Divide the spool price by the spool weight to get the price per gram, then multiply by the part weight. A 25 EUR spool of 1000 g works out to 0.025 EUR per gram, so a 100 g print uses 2.50 EUR of filament. The calculator does this for you and can add a supports allowance on top.

How much electricity does a 3D print use?

Multiply the printer average power in kilowatts by the print time in hours, then by your price per kWh. A 120 W printer running 5 hours at 0.39 EUR per kWh uses about 0.23 EUR of electricity. For most FDM prints the power cost is only a few cents.

Should I include printer wear in the price?

If you sell prints, yes. Divide the printer price by its expected lifespan in hours to get an hourly wear cost, then multiply by the print time. It is optional here and switched off by default, but it matters for accurate pricing on a machine that runs a lot.

Why add a failure rate?

Some prints fail from warping, clogs or poor adhesion, and the wasted filament and time still cost money. A failure buffer of around 10 percent spreads that risk across your successful prints, so your average cost per print stays realistic.

What is a fair price per kilogram of PLA?

Standard PLA usually costs between 15 and 30 EUR per kilogram from the main brands. Silk, matte, PETG and ASA filaments cost more. Enter your actual spool price for the most accurate result.

Does this work for PETG, ABS and other filaments?

Yes. The cost math is the same for any FDM filament, so just enter the spool price and weight for the material you use. Heavier prints use more grams, which the part weight input already accounts for.
